Safe Haven One is the backbone of the National Disaster Response Team. When it was designed, every aspect of a disaster was researched, scrutinized, and dismantled step by step to discover what would work and what wouldn't inorder to provide the best possible services available. Then we took it one step further and viewed it from a disaster victims perspective. This included the equipment used, vehicles that responded and supplies available before and after a disaster. The wealth of information that was acquired was invaluable in the final stages of Safe Haven Ones design.
Here's an example of simple innovation. What could you do with a 24ft x 40ft tarp, 6 pressure treated 2x4x12's, some hardware and some rope? This is what the NDRT did with all that:
We now have a Medical Aid tent, Food & Water distribution tent, Shelter from the elements, and so much more. It's quick, easy, and simple to put up. Best of all it is light weight, repairable and only cost: $150
The NDRT intends to place a SHO unit in each State. The States are divided up into Regions (As shown below).
When a disaster strikes in one Region, the State SHO Units of that region, under the command of the regional office, will respond to that disaster depending on the size, nature and supplies needed. In the event of the disaster zone covers several Regions or several regions need to converge on one region (Such as another major disaster on the scale of Hurricane Katrina), the Headquarters Division will activate and coordinate all regions involved in response. This creates greater resources to be applied in any given area of the disaster.
*NOTE* Safe Haven One; is not intended as a permanent or long term solution in a disaster but to help in the Recovery process. The mission of SHO is to give emergency first aid, provide food, water, supply distribution and temporarily shelter.
DAU or Amphibious Search & Rescue Units are a special part of the Search & Rescue Section. These specific vehicles are intended mostly for water and flood operations.
*Note* (This is not the SAR unit, but the newer version of the "Bus") They can carry up to 5 tons of supplies or 50 people. These units would have made a world of difference during the relief efforts of hurricane Katrina, and people who suffered or died may not have, had the Agencies in control, excepted their help.
